In Which I Know Nothing About Belgium

When I’ve thought about visiting Belgium … well, I guess that’s the problem with this trip. Until this year I’ve never thought about visiting Belgium.

Truthfully it’s not a country that has caught my imagination or even entered my consciousness much beyond its mere existence. Yes I knew it was its own country but wasn’t it sorta really just France? Or maybe Netherlands.

I knew it was somewhere up there in Europe anyway. Odds are good I could have found it on a map.

And it’s got an airline. I knew that.

Then my friends Laurie and Bill went, which notched it up a little bit in my brain. I now knew about the great time they had, but it still hadn’t moved the needle much.

Then I found a cheap fare several months ago and decided to go.

So here I am, on a flight from JFK to Brussels, and in spare moments I’m casually reading about Bruges. This makes me feel a bit guilty because I don’t have anything planned yet, but at least I have a flight and a couple of hotels.

And that means I have starting point from which to learn about Belgium. I hear it’s much more than just beer, fries, waffles, and chocolate.

As it turns out, I’ve already learned about Flanders (of which I had some awareness) and the Ardennes (which I was fairly certain was in France). And I have a week to learn a lot more.

So join me, my friends, on my journey to Belgium. Butterblogger really doesn’t know anything about Belgium, but he’s excited to find out, and maybe have some fun in the process.

(Really? The Ardennes is mostly in Belgium?! Holy crap!)
